Final Portfolio

Art 141: Introduction to Digital Art

For my portfolio project, I used collage to construct speculative spaces and landscapes out of marine biological forms and imagery. My starting intention was to explore themes of ecological utopia, fantasy and girlhood through the symbol of mermaids as representing an intersection of human and nonhuman understanding. My goal is to apply this perspective to the genre of ‘architectural fiction.’ The three artists whose work influenced this idea are Monika Marchewa, Vittorio Aureli, and Refik Anadol.

My final portfolio consists of four images. The first is a representation of an interior space in the home of a mermaid. Light filters in through a window, illuminating a surreal underwater boudoir. The second is a residential neighborhood where humans and mermaids live alongside each other in modular ‘barnacle units.’ The third picture imagines a public promenade where the buildings emulate the form and structure of bioluminescent invertebrates. The last image depicts a lively scene at an underwater bar full of mermaids dancing and socializing.
